Inside the NBA: Jordan’s comment wasn’t meant to coax Durant out of school
Bonnell speaks about his interview with Jordan further in his latest blog posting. I buy what he’s selling. People give Bonnell a hard time. I like him, for the most part. He sure does take a lot of flak on his own site.
I didn’t ask about Durant. I was following up on a point Jordan made about the value of versatility. I asked him how versatile the Bobcats were currently. First, Jordan mentioned Gerald Wallace, then he mentioned how Adam Morrison is struggling defensively. Then he wandered off on this point about how the “kid from Texas’’ shows signs of NBA versatility.

Jordan gives a little too much to Bonnell, gets fined for Durant comments

Charlotte Observer | 03/17/2007 | Bobcats fined for Jordan’s comments
The Charlotte Bobcats were fined $15,000 for part-owner Michael Jordan’s comments about Texas underclassman Kevin Durant.
Bonnell and the Observer with the scoopage on a story they created. In a recent interview… with the Observer… Bonnell wrote of his conversation with Jordan:
Versatility is important to Jordan, and it’s something he feels his team lacks. He mentioned Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard as that type of player, and volunteered his curiosity about Texas freshman Kevin Durant.
Jordan said “the kid in Texas” shows “all the right signs.”
“But it’s still college and not the pros,” Jordan cautioned of depending on the draft. “Physically, I don’t know whether he can stand (up to) an 82-game season or the physical (nature of) our game.” — http://www.charlotte.com/140/story/50725.html
Bonnell carefully wrote that Jordan “volunteered his curiosity” about Durant. Undoubtedly, the reclusive Jordan will become even more so now that one of the only beat writers the team has led him into a trap.
True, it’s not Bonnell’s job to be a fan. He’s a reporter, and he’s doing his job. Jordan, likewise, should know that he can’t comment on college players per NBA rules.
Still, what was the harm in Jordan’s comments? It’s not as if it is a secret that Durant is a bad mother. It’s not as if Durant couldn’t have gone to just about ANY sports website and seen an article and opinion on the fact that he would be a top 2 pick in the NBA draft this year - guaranteed. It’s not like you couldn’t go to any fan forum and see that every fan in the nation that follows college basketball acknowledges that Durant and fellow freshman Greg Oden of Ohio State are the best players in college basketball.
So how could you fault Jordan? He was comparing a player to another player during the interview with Bonnell and the Observer and stated FACTS.
Shame on you NBA.
