The Dark Knight approaches

heath ledger as the joker

Check out the Dark Knight teaser trailer at whysoserious.com.

On loading the page, you can view the trailer or look at a “police report” from a recent publicity stunt during the San Diego Comic-Con. Click Here for “police report“.

On that police report page there are several links to other things; galleries, clues used during the game and another “police report” talking about the “death” of the Joker.

I haven’t been following this much, but from the little that I’ve picked up, it looks like this version of the Joker will be much more dark and a bit more realistic than previous versions. Note that I have not read The Dark Knight graphic novels that these are allegedly based on. Supposedly, this version of the Joker was not thrown/fell/dropped into a vat of chemicals but instead has a huge scar that looks like he’s “smiling” (see pic above if somehow you missed it). I’m assuming the scar and the event that led to it took a huge emotional toll on an individual that was already screwed-up, thus creating “the Joker” that we know, for the most part. The makeup is just part of his new persona.

300 should rule the weekend.

300

Julien and I went to see 300 last night at the local Carmike Cinema. The place was packed, mostly with males under 25 years of age. As we walked out, there was a line of even more sub-25 males waiting to get in. My guess, and this isn’t a stretch, is that this is the #1 movie in America by Monday, and it won’t even be close.

Visual effects were stunning. The cinematography was excellent. Some parts I could have lived without, but overall I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars. The only thing I have a problem with is that despite all the slashing and blood spraying everywhere, the Spartan soldiers didn’t get any on themselves.

300 is Frank Millers take on the Battle of Thermopylae, where Sparta’s King Leonidas led 300 Spartan warriors against the invading horde of Xerxes’ Persians.

From Wikipedia:

In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the enemy in one of history’s most famous last stands. A small force led by King Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I could pass. After three days of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Dismissing the rest of the army, King Leonidas stayed behind with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespian volunteers. Though they knew it meant their own deaths, they held their position and secured the retreat of the other Greek forces. The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained heavy losses, extremely disproportionate to those of the Greeks. The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens the invaluable time to prepare for a decisive naval battle. The subsequent Greek victory in the Battle of Salamis left much of the Persian navy destroyed. Xerxes was forced to flee to Asia and leave his army in Greece under Mardonius, who was to meet the Greeks in battle for one last time. The Spartans and other Greek allies assembled at full strength and decisively defeated the Persians in the Battle of Plataea, ending the Greco-Persian War and with that, Persian expansion into Europe.

The performance of the defenders at the battle of Thermopylae is often used as an example of the advantages of training, equipment, and good use of terrain to maximize an army’s potential, as well as a symbol of courage against overwhelming odds. The heroic sacrifice of the Spartans and the Thespians has captured the minds of many throughout the ages and has given birth to many cultural references as a result.

TalkingApes.com – » Snakes On A Plane: Our Review
This story is about more than Snakes On a Plane. It’s a well-acted tale of camaraderie in the face of tragedy, emotional struggles, and the bonds they form. Samuel L Jackson turns in his best performance ever. He’s deep. He’s insightful. He’s the hero that rises in the face of adversity in Phoenix-like fashion to quell the beast, and his own personal demons.

Okay. I lied. This movie is about Snakes. and they’re on a plane.

The acting is some of the worst to ever splay across the big screen. The plot is paper thin, and poorly concieved. As far as the CGI goes, let’s just say that this isn’t Lord Of The Rings.

Does that mean you shouldn’t see it?

No way. This has to be seen. It’s one of the best bad movies I’ve ever seen.

Apple in talks to offer movies at iTunes – Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Apple Computer Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL – news) is in talks with most of Hollywood's studios to offer movie downloads via its popular iTunes Music Store Web site, show business newspaper Daily Variety reported on Monday.Citing unnamed sources, Variety said iTunes might begin offering film downloads by the end of 2006, but currently a price on iTunes is a sticking point in negotiations.

Very cool. My only beef is that single episodes of shows are $2.00. By the time I buy all the shows I want to see, I might as well have bought cable.

TiVo Applies For Content-On-Demand Download Service – Gizmodo

TiVo is going to let you download a show/movie on demand, kind of like pay-per-view. The different types of content are going to be free, subscription or pay-per-view, and are going to be priced accordingly. TiVo is using the same type of authentication scheme as the TiVoToGo encryption/decryption system.

I guess I'll keep the TiVo subscription after all.

Yahoo makes Web video search more like TV channels – Yahoo! News
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO – news) is making it easier for Web surfers to find videos by upgrading its search system to become more like saving favorite TV channels with a remote control, the company said on Wednesday.

The Internet media giant aims to recapture share in the fast-emerging market for viewing videos online — the year's hottest Internet trend — where Yahoo has lost ground over the past six months to upstart video search company YouTube

Pretty soon I'll be able to ditch my Cable TV. As soon as they start streaming the NFL network or ESPN via the web, I'm as good as gone.
