ESPN.com - NFL/DRAFT07 - McShay: Underclassmen shake up latest mock draft

14. Carolina (8-8)

Projected pick: Reggie Nelson, S, Florida
Nelson, a speedy center fielder with excellent ball skills, would provide the type of range and playmaking ability that the Panthers are missing at the safety position.

Todd McShay of ESPN.com has the Panthers taking Reggie Nelson with #14. To view his entire mock draft, CLICK HERE.

SI.com - Writers - Mock Draft No. 1: 11-20 - Friday January 26, 2007 11:49AM

14 DE Adam Carriker Nebraska Sr. 6-6 295
If Mike Rucker has indeed played his last game as a Panther, Carriker would fit nicely lining up opposite of left end Julius Peppers. His stock is expected to rise after his Combine workout. LSU safety LaRon Landry would be another solid option.

Don Bank’s latest mock draft has the Panthers selecting DE Adam Carriker from Nebraska. Would be weird to have a Cornhusker replacing a Cornhusker (Rucker). I think I’d prefer Landry if he were available.

Winston-Salem Journal | Lighten Up: Smith says NASCAR has gotten carried away with polishing its marketing image

Smith said that NASCAR has gone overboard in penalizing drivers for such minor infractions as bad language, and for doing its best to eliminate the scuffling and rolling-in-the-mud for which the sport was once renowned. That echoes what Humpy Wheeler, Smiths No. 2 man at Speedway Motorsports, has been saying about NASCAR needing more characters and less spanking by NASCAR officials.

“Look at what built this sport,” Smith said. “Dont sanitize the sport too much.

Do you agree with Bruton Smith’s comments about NASCAR going down the wrong path? Talk about it in our NASCAR FORUMS or post a comment here.

Charlotte Observer | 01/25/2007 | 8:44 pm | UNCC to poll students on football

UNC Charlotte students will soon get a chance to tell leaders how much they would pay to bring football to the university.

The schools Student Senate unanimously approved a resolution Thursday to hold an official vote on financial support for a football team between Feb. 5 and Feb. 19. Only current UNCC students can vote in the poll, which will have three to five questions and is designed to gauge whether students will support a student fee increase to add the sport.

About 10 years too late. ;)

Charlotte Observer | 01/24/2007 | Leak could be a starter in the NFL

Two weeks ago, Chris Leak was the toast of college football.

Now, his national championship most valuable player trophy is on display at Independence High, which he led to three state championships.

This week, the former Florida quarterback is in Mobile, Ala., practicing for Saturday’s Senior Bowl.

Leak measured under 6′, which is the kiss-of-death for any QB trying to make it in the pros today. It may have pushed him out of the first day and into the second. The NFL has tended to favor taller QBs in recent years, right or wrong.

I think Leak has what it takes to be an NFL QB. I think if someone gave him a legitimage shot, they’d be pleasantly surprised. You can’t judge him by the offense he ran at Florida — that isn’t his style. I’m going to be very interested to see him play this weekend in the senior bowl, and I’ll be keeping a close eye on him at the combine.

CSN on iTunesI don’t toot our horn too often, but i would like to show off something I just found on iTunes today.

Our Podcast has gotten pretty popular since I submitted it last week. We’ve got more popularity than notable podcasts like Steve Spurrier’s Podcast and Carolina Blue’s podcast and much more than the Greensboro News & Record’s sports podcast as well.

I’d be lying if I said I thought that we’d be this popular this soon, but it’s what we aspire to be. Thanks for everyone that has downloaded and listened to the show; it’ll get better, trust me.

WIRED SCIENCE | Pilot Episode | PBS

If you didn’t know, WIRED (my favorite magazine, tech, sports or otherwise) has a show now on PBS. You can watch it online HERE. What is great, is that I don’t have to have cable to watch it. More and more I’m breaking the stranglehold cable TV has had on me for the last 15 years. If only the NFL Network streamed itself over the internet.

WIRED

Charlotte Observer | 01/15/2007 | Panthers fire offensive coordinator Henning

The Carolina Panthers fired offensive coordinator Dan Henning and two other assistants Monday, two weeks after finishing a disappointing 8-8 season.

Offensive line coach Mike Maser and secondary coach Rod Perry were also let go.

Finally. FINALLY!

Being in the newspaper business, (kinda), you are always thinking “what is the future of the newspaper business?”. Many people think it’s the web, but is it, really?

This is where we go backwards by going forwards.

Undoubtedly you’ve heard of things like those bendable and foldable displays coming out “in the future” where you’d just have a sheet of plastic and your new newspaper would magically appear every morning. Plastic Logic is making this a reality.

Plastic Logic“Plastic Logic is building the first commercial manufacturing facility targeted at flexible active-matrix display modules for ‘take anywhere, read anywhere’ electronic reader products. It will utilise Plastic Logic’s unique process to fabricate active-matrix backplanes on plastic substrates which, when combined with an electronic-paper frontplane material, will be used to create display modules that are thin light and robust. This will enable a digital reading experience that is much closer to paper than any other technology.”

Can you imagine a website that looks like a newspaper that is displayed on something that isn’t disposeable and infinitely reuseable? It would put all the emphasis back into the layout of the newspaper instead of how it should (or could) be displayed online. Also, would it update the paper as the day progressed, with new articles appearing, possibly having something more important bump the lead article off the prime spot? There are a lot of new ways of thinking that the industry as a whole will have to start thinking about, and many forward-thinking companies do already.

Here is a video showing how flexible the Plastic Logic display is:
