Bobcats General Manager & Head Coach Bernie Bickerstaff shared his thoughts on selecting Adam Morrison with the third overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.

This is from BobcatsBasketball.com, interview of Bernie after Morrison’s workout.

CHARLOTTE BOBCATS: Morrison Highlights Monday Workout
BOBCATS GENERAL MANAGER & HEAD COACH BERNIE BICKERSTAFF
(On the workout) Very competitive — three competitive young men. They all can score. They’ll all be in the mix one way or the other — probably two guys that are definitely lottery picks, Carney and Morrison. And the kid from South Carolina did a good job, Kinsey, he just needs more exposure and he’ll probably get there.

(On Morrison) He can put the ball in the basket. And he can get his shot — very clever — I think that’s very important. And obviously there’s no problem with him scoring, that’s what he does. And the guy competes, that’s what made the real session good. We had three guys who really competed, so he’s very competitive.

(On what he learns about the players from the workouts) Well, whether they can get through them, that’s number one. We’ve had all the drills set up, we do it different for the wingmen and the guards and the big people, and different looks to see if they can catch and shoot — see how they can put the ball on the floor, how they compete. We watch the tapes prior to the workouts, like we had tapes on the guys this morning. We watched those and we looked for what they say their weaknesses are. We want to confirm them for ourselves.

(On if he talked with Morrison about his diabetes) No, we did not talk about his diabetes. I imagine that’s an obligatory question. That’s our doctor’s call, and we’ve had our trainer talk to Chris Dudley and Mike Saunders, who was in NY when Chris played. So we are interested in the basketball aspect of it — the doctors will make that (health) call.

(On where he thinks Morrison fits in the draft) He was probably linked to first three or four picks. I think it will be very difficult for Toronto to pass up on him (at No. 1), if he continues to workout. I think this is his first workout, but it’s going to be difficult to pass on him. He’s a good player.

(On the criticism of his defense) Well that’s a knock on the NBA, so he’s a kindred spirit.

(On the Bobcats selling their program vs. the players selling themselves to the program) Oh, we pay well (laughs). If you talk to guys that are here with us, they want to be here. We have a nice core group — a nice group of young men. It’s a nice state-of-the-art facility, and like I said the salary is still the same, minutes — you can get and you will know your role. It’s a pretty good environment to be in.

(On Morrison being able to play the three) The way we play, you can go three or two because it’s basically the same. He can handle a basketball and put the ball on the floor. I’ve seen him bring it. But I have to say, guys are so good in the NBA that’s it’s very difficult to defend one-on-one, so that’s why the team concept comes in — defensively.

(On his shooting at the end of the workout) They all have the ability — they reached down. That’s why we do the drills the way we do them, to see who can persevere when things get tough. And he did. He’ll be fine in another year.

Winston-Salem Journal | Jordan says Bobcats must stop being cheapskates

CHARLOTTE - You’ve got to like Mike if he can pull this off.Michael Jordan, the newest investor in the Charlotte Bobcats, is trying to persuade owner Bob Johnson to loosen the purse strings and start spending the money necessary to build a championship team.

Everyone’s favorite Bobcats Non-Bobcats Beat writer (does that make sense?), JD tells it like it is.

Welcome back, MJ–too bad it’s not Chicago

Mark Cuban, who just now has been unstrapped from a straitjacket after his Dallas Mavericks blew the NBA Finals, was asked if Jordan’s return was good for the league.”Not unless he’s going to make a comeback,” he shot back.

Wrong. Anytime the Greatest Player Ever is back in the game, it’s a wonderful thing. Too bad he’s returning to some other town again, not this town.

Chicago Sun-Times Writer and frequest contributor to ESPN’s Around the Horn, Jay Mariotti writes about how he thinks Jordan will do in Charlotte as an owner and wishes he would have been able to come back and save the Bulls.

The following was posted on our forum by Wiggin:

I saw the Bobcats Insider show this morning. It was their draft preview. There were a few interesting nuggets I picked up on. Whether they mean anything or not, we’ll see. Anyway, I thought I would share those nuggets.

While being interviewed by Steve Martin, Bernie said that if Toronto wants to move back to get Bargnini, he didn’t think he would be there if they moved past us.

I just found this interesting. Because the implication is that either the Bulls (or their trading partner) would take him or we would…you’d assume Toronto wouldn’t trade with someone after their guy. So, is this smoke to make Toronto think twice about shipping the pick to someone who wants our guy, or is Bargnini at the top of our list? Initially, I thought smoke, but then wondered if what he said on this local show would actually get to the other teams.

Kenny Williamson (the Bobcats Director of Scouting) talked about some of the key players in the draft. I’ll list the players, then what he said.

Bargnini:
- He said he had excellent range and that the NBA 3 point is no problem. Also said he is an excellent passer with a high basketball IQ.
- He did mention that he needs to work on rebounding, but then minimized that by saying he is young and it will come in time.

This is especially interesting when combined with Bernie’s statement.

Thomas:
- Said he is a late bloomer who has to work on getting skilled. Said he is a put-back guy who needs to learn all sorts of moves.
-He did say the sky is the limit for Thomas.

Gay:
-Said Gay is very versatile and athletic, and can basically do everything (shoot, dribble, pass, defend, etc.)
-Also said RG is very exciting at times, but fades out at times (this was when he was talking about his positives, so take that for what its worth).
- Said he needs to learn when to be a compliment player and when to be a take charge guy.

Morrison:
- Said Ammo is one of the most ready players and a fierce competitor.
- Said he is a scorer, not a shooter.
- Mentioned that he needs to work on defense, to learn how to space.
- He also said he seems to have is Diabetes under control.

Nothing real earth shattering there.

Aldridge:
- Said LA can handle the ball, shoot, and rebound.
- Mentioned he can be dominant.
- But also said that he “takes time off sometimes, kinda like floats around a little bit.”

He then talked about Randy Foye, Marcus Williams, Sheldon Williams, and J.J. Redick. Also mentioned Withers, Justin Gray, Winters (from Davidson), and Cedric Simmons as some local guys.

Basically a lot of stuff we already knew, but I found Bernie’s comment interesting, as well as Williamson’s praise of Bargnini while minimizing his weakness. I got the impression that they think Thomas is a huge project, and I would be shocked if we took him. I think they feel like most everyone about Gay. They love his athleticism and skills, but are concerned about his occasional disappearances in games. I think they love Morrison, but realize he will take a lot of work on defense. As for Aldrige, I think they like him well enough, but question his desire.

Conspicuous by his absence was Roy. Not one word about a legitimate possibility at #3, despite talking about a few guys that are clearly not in the picture. Either some things have occurred that have caused us to take him off our draft board (or perhaps the questions about his knee), or they really like him, and don’t want to give anything away by saying too much. So most likely it is either Roy or Bargnini as the third player in our top three.
